TikTok Shop for premium brands: selling without discounting
RRP protection, value-led offers and professional-led LIVE for brands that cannot afford to look cheap.
TikTok Shop is now the UK’s second-largest online beauty retailer. Winning on it has two halves — native content and an offer positioned to be bought — and most brands only plan for one.
TikTok Shop did not exist in the UK five years ago. It is now the country's second largest online beauty retailer, and UK beauty sales have increased 60% YoY.
Most brands are overwhelmed by it, which is fair enough. Affiliates, LIVE, paid media, samples, Seller Centre, GMV Max, and no obvious place to begin. Start with what the platform actually is. TikTok is a discovery engine, and that is true whether someone is scrolling through their FYP or searching on the platform.
The For You page decides what people see based on what it thinks they will watch, so a lot of your reach arrives with no intention of buying. But plenty of people do also search with intent, particularly in beauty, where TikTok is now the place people go for recommendations and advice before anywhere else.
Those are not two separate audiences. Let's say someone searches for a foundation shade, watches a few videos, buys nothing, and gets served your product on their For You page a fortnight later. Discovery and intent keep swapping places, which is why being consistently present on TikTok Shop beats a single campaign moment.
While the barrier to join the platform is low, the barrier to winning is everything that comes after set-up. Let's look at two key things that decide it, and most brands only plan for one.
83% of TikTok Shop shoppers have discovered a new product on the platform. That tells you what kind of channel this is: people arrive to be shown something new. Your video lands in a stranger's feed cold, so the hook needs to do its work in the first two seconds or it won't at all.
This means content made for another platform will not get you the result you want. If it looks like an advert, it gets scrolled past. The look then has to stay consistent enough to be recognisable by the fifth time someone sees you — building that frequency.
Discovery is also why share of feed matters more than follower count. The brand producing the most relevant content in a category tends to own that category, regardless of how big its own audience is.
Volume matters, but volume of the right content. You cannot always predict which creator converts, so start wide, find the winners, then brief and incentivise everyone else against what worked. Nurture a community and expect 100+ videos from 100 weekly samples, they should be videos built on something you know already sells.
TikTok LIVE belongs in this bucket, it works on similar rules of fixed cadence, trained hosts and consistency. 6,000+ sessions run every day and the ceiling is a long way up: Somerce holds the single-LIVE world record on TikTok Shop at $2.7m, set with P.Louise across 14 hours.
Here is the half that often gets missed.
This is where discovery and search meet. Someone scrolling past was not shopping, so your offer has to build the reason to buy from a standing start. Someone searching your category is comparing you against everything else in that feed, on price, shipping and reviews, in the same few seconds. Neither of them is going to work around a bad offer.
You can have the best video on the platform from the most relevant creator on it and still sell nothing. If you are asking £3.99 shipping on a £10 product someone can pick up in their local Boots that afternoon, the content was never the problem. Nobody is buying that.
The fix is not to discount your way out of it. Treating TikTok Shop as a discount channel just trains your audience to wait for the next deal, and you have handed away your margin permanently. We typically recommend selling at RRP and building the reason to buy through offers structured to add value rather than erode price.
Positioned to be bought means:
A great example of all of this working together is the US brand, Micro Ingredients. They spent eight years building a vertically integrated supplement business, before opening a TikTok Shop in March 2024. Then they seeded the product hard and ran an aggressive giveaway to get people posting. They worked with 24,000 creators who drove 117,000+ videos. Publicly reported figures put them at $50m in their first seven months and $110m+ by mid-2025, and a $31 collagen powder drove more than a third of the revenue.
No large ad budget, no famous founder. A product good enough to keep purchasing, with the margin to fund a creator army, and one hero SKU carrying the shop. That is the shape of a winning shop.
Most channels only capture demand that already exists. Paid search harvests intent someone already had. Retail sells to people who walked in looking to shop. TikTok Shop does both jobs at once: it generates the demand and then gives you somewhere to convert it within a few clicks.
However sometimes that demand does not stay on the platform. TikTok Shop creates demand and then lets three different channels capture it: the high-intent viewer buys in the moment in-app; the considered buyer goes and searches for your own site, sometimes weeks later; and the loyal-shopper buys where they already trust the experience, which is often long-standing retail partners.
Not every brand is playing for GMV inside the app, and that is fine, as long as it is a decision rather than an accident.
We saw this directly on a launch this year. A client went live on TikTok Shop and had their best day on their own website since Black Friday, with site traffic more than doubling. That was on top of the TikTok Shop GMV, not instead of it.
Our view is that halo is real and it should be measured. If you only look at in-app GMV, you are measuring half the impact.
TikTok Shop rewards brands who treat it as an always-on shop, not a campaign. Shops live or die on content and product together: the best video will not sell a product that is not positioned to be bought, and the best product will not sell if nobody sees it. They trade continuously rather than launching and stopping, which is why consistency compounds where a single big moment can struggle. Get both halves right and the rest is execution.
